Around perimenopause

The perimenopause is a natural process, just like puberty and pregnancy. The experiences in this stage of life vary a lot among women. Some hardly notice any symptoms, while others find them very uncomfortable. But even if you are bothered by symptoms – don’t worry - there are many ways to deal with them.

Due to reduced hormone production, you might experience things like:
  • your menstrual cycle becoming irregular or your flow changing;
  • your periods lasting longer – or being much shorter;
  • you might get bleeding in between periods;
  • you might get hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia or palpitations;
  • you might feel a loss of energy or experience mood swings.
The end of this process is marked by the last menstrual period, known as the menopause. This usually happens around the age of 50-52, but every woman is different! Also most women experience changes in their body differently.

Here are our top 5 ideas of how to deal with possible symptoms:
  1. Stress can make symptoms worse, so find ways to relax.  Take a bath or read your favourite book.
  2. Create a regular exercise programme.
  3. Wear layers so that if you do get hot flushes it’s easy to lighten what you’re wearing.
  4.  Keep your bedroom cool to help you sleep.
  5.  Some women find relief via hormone supplements.
Talk to your GP or gynaeocologist about what’s best for you.
